Kasha And Peppadews – A Memoir

Love ’em both.

I had a kasha knish today and I believe that I am the only person in the world under the age of 82 to do so. For that, I am proud. I will not allow kasha (buckwheat groats, disease-sounding?) to go gentle into that good night. Actually, kasha is hugely popular in Russia (and the White House, I suppose, depending on who is supping there). “Yes, two scoops for you, Mr. President.”

I also had some peppadews today secondary to a pit-stop at Zabar’s to buy a cheese knife. I know, I know. I will be entertaining on Sunday and they will talk if I am without. A deliciously piquant (I’ll wait while you google it) pepper that was discovered in only 1993 in South Africa (the Limpopo province for you NPR listeners).  And I thought all the peppers in the world had already been discovered! The name ‘peppadew’ is a portmanteau (I’ll wait) of ‘pepper’ and ‘dew.’ Sweet with some mild heat, peppadews sit at around 1200 SHU on the Scoville scale (not waiting). By the way, my mouth is still afire. 1200 my ass. Oh, kasha = -0 SHU.

Finally putting those thoughts down that had people scrunching their faces or quietly sneaking away but nonetheless made me laugh. So scrunch, sneak, laugh, enjoy.
