An error in design – the human foot is a mess. When I see a 5 year old with their velcro-closure sneakers on the ‘wrong” feet – I am truly inspired! They are on to something – out of the footwear of babes. Our toes are on all wrong. The small toe, oft-referred to, wrongly, as the pinky-toe should not be on the outer edge of the foot in such a vulnerable position. The big toe, rarely referred to, correctly, as the thumb-toe, should reside at the outer edge as protector and defender of all of the toes. Additionally, gait-experts and biomedical engineers agree that having the powerful big-toe on the outer edge of the foot would virtually eliminate the need for the science of podiatry as well as reduce the knee and hip transplant onslaught. While I’m certainly not the first to make this observation, some have gone as far as undergoing transplant surgery (see photo below). I have also been studying the hand and have come to the conclusion that the thumb should be the new middle finger.
